Drinks with Dupree is a new series guest-written by Rebecca Dupree, Governmental Affairs Departmental Coordinator. Prior to moving back to Texas, Rebecca had over a decade-long career in the wine industry as a winemaker and certified Level II Sommelier.

This time around, I'm mixing it up a bit and suggesting two beautifully distilled and packaged whiskeys as well as a mocktail that you can add a punch whiskey to if you like. Many have said this year's election has been stressful and they are just waiting for November 5th. These libations you can enjoy on their own to take the edge off or with family and friends. I've enjoyed both of these whiskeys on various occasions, and I had the opportunity to tour one of the distilleries. That one being High West.
It's worth the scenic drive East of Salt Lake City, Utah to Wanship, Utah to tour High West Distillery. Their Campfire is a blend of straight rye whiskey, straight bourbon whiskey, and blended malt scotch whiskey. With a smokey sweet, flambéed cherry nose and warm layers it pairs perfectly with brown butter chocolate chip cookies. A bonus from High West is A Midwinter Night’s Dram Act 10 Scene 6. An exceptional blend of two straight rye whiskies aged in used French oak and port wine barrels. With layers of fig jam, raspberry pie filling, vanilla, baking spices and starting at around $300 a bottle it truly is the pinnacle of High West's distilling production.
Brenne French Single Malt Whiskey is the only Whiskey aged in French Limousin Oak barrels and Cognac casks. An elegant whiskey on its own that truly surprised me with its creme brûlée, burnt caramel nose and fruit forward flavor profile including tropical fruits and warming spices like cinnamon and clove.
At around $60, either whiskey will make a wonderful gift to bring to holiday parties or add to your personal collection.
As we edge closer to fall weather and Thanksgiving, a cranberry bourbon smash or cranberry spritz is a wonderful seasonal drink. Mix together, if using, your of choice spirit, ice, a splash of soda water or ginger ale, cranberry juice, and garnish with a sprig of rosemary or mint.
Cheers!
