Memorial Day Office Closure & Holiday Information!

In honor of the upcoming holiday weekend, the office will be closing early tomorrow Friday, May 22nd at 3pm, including the Legal Hotline, and will be closed on Monday, May 25th.

Memorial Day is a federal holiday in the United States for mourning the U.S. military personnel who died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. It is observed on the last Monday of May. Originally called Decoration Day, was established in 1868 to honor Civil War dead by decorating their graves with flowers. The holiday evolved after World War I to honor all U.S. personnel who died in war.

• Federal Holiday: Congress passed the Uniform Monday Holiday Act in 1968, which established Memorial Day as the last Monday in May to create a three-day weekend, effective 1971.

• Traditions: In addition to visiting cemeteries and placing flowers or flags, the National Moment of Remembrance encourages a pause at 3:00 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. The red poppy, inspired by the WWI poem "In Flanders Fields," became a symbol of remembrance in 1921.
